Rinchenpong, August 8, 2011: Citing example of existential dilemma and identity crisis being faced by various tribes the world over including the Red Indians in the US, Ionu, pigmy in Japan, Routey and Kusundas in Nepal and the tribal population of Andaman Nicobar Island, the Chief Minister Shri Pawan Chamling congratulated the Lepcha community in Sikkim for their progress and prosperity. He further said, that Sikkim witnessed Cultural Revolution after 1985 much like in Russia in the past. However, in Sikkim it was spearheaded by the State Government itself by promoting the overall interest of all the tribes living in Sikkim including the Lepchas. The Chief Minister, Shri Pawan Chamling was addressing large gathering of Lepchas coming from all parts of Sikkim, neighbouring district of Darjeeling and Nepal and Bhutan including large number of local gathering on the occasion of Tendong Lho Rum Faat, an indigenous primitive Lepcha festival in Sikkim.
Every single individual in the State should be conscious of his/her right and responsibility. We must, as the democratic citizens of this great Nation, check our tendency to seek our rights alone and run away from shouldering our responsibility, Shri Chamling exhorted. Saying education as the only effective weapon for progress, the Chief Minister called upon Lepcha community to give maximum emphasis on educating themselves and their children. Duly accepting the world situation and the present day reality, the Chief Minister also asked them to compete regionally, nationally and internationally in every field.
Sikkim is disparity-free State and ours is probably the only State which is exemplary in the whole country. The Chief Minister also informed the gathering that the issue of recognition of Lepchas as the Most Primitive Tribe in India as being forwarded by the State Government is awaited from the Central Government.
